Photo Proposal For New Project

For our next project, Shanon and I have decided to team up and create a photo documentary of a day in the life at the new Doane Stuart. The idea for this project came to me when I was thinking about a similar project a friend of mine did over the summer of her schools organic farm. I immediately fell in love with the idea of creating a photo documentary and the opportunity finally arrived for me to create one. When I mentioned it to Shanon this past Thursday, she also loved the idea and was more than willing to help me create one.
We are not attempting to extract or artificially create a specific emotion that should be associated with Doane Stuart; we simply are attempting to capture what a real day in the life of a Doane Stuart person is.
The day will begin by walking towards Doane Stuart from across the street. The film will begin with a photograph of the front of Doane Stuart in its entirety. From there either Shanon or I will walk from the corner of the sidewalk to the inside of the building, taking pictures with every few steps, the entire walk from the street corner to the locker area is going to be photographed, and for the most part we hope or we will ask for people to act natural so we can capture what it is like to walk around the school before classes.
When it finally time for us to head to class, (depending on who has a free period) we are going to alternate the responsibility of photographing a particular class. We hope to capture what classes, like American Government or Advanced Chemistry, at Doane Stuart are really like. These photographs are not going to take up an entire class period, but we hope that in these few minutes we will be able to reveal how engaged Doane Stuart teachers and students are in their work.
After first period, we will head to morning meeting and take pictures from the pews. After morning meeting we will take pictures of the next two period classes. For second break, we may photograph a club meeting or a class meeting. After fourth period, we will photograph lunch in the Commons.
As well as documenting classes Dylan and I will also document what students do during their free periods, whether it’s studying or goofing off. Some things we will photograph more than others. For example we might only take two or three photographs of a class and take six or seven of lunch time or a free period. After the school day is over we will end as we started with the exception of heading away from the school rather than towards it

Joie de Vivre Photograph 4

After completing my first two photographs in my set of four I realized that although my first two shots express motion, it was all staged and I really wanted to capture natural reactions of people in the midst of a soccer game as opposed to asking someone to kick a ball. So on Friday I attended the girls soccer game and took a plethara of photographs, depicting not only the natural movement involved in a soccer game, but also the facial expressions the one can see on a player in the midst of a game.

Photograph 3 is relatively in focus and I think the expression on the subjects face is absolutely perfect. It provides a comical aspect to the game of soccer. It is evident that the person in control of the ball desires to pound the hardest shot she possibly can on net. My subject realizes this and has already prepared for the unavoidable reality- that she will be pelted by a soccer
ball. Photograph 4 shows how even in competative sports, we are all ultimately out to have a good time. My two subjects, obviously on different teams, are fighting over control of the ball, yet the expression on their face suggests that there is no tension between the two players at all, it is merely out of good, clean fun and that is something that is heartwarming.

If i could change any aspects of these photos, overall I would have wished for better lighting conditions, than the damp dreary day last Friday amounted to be. Also in both of these photographs I wish they were both a little more in focus, however it is hard to capture people moving so fast in perfect focus so it is understandable why there is some room for error. If I had more time I would have liked to have awaited a sunnier day to shoot these photographs, but I took what I could get.

Joie de Vivre Photograph 2

I am relatively satisfied with these first two photographs (Joie de Vivre Photograph 1 &2), the images came out crisp and clear for the most part and were taken with a feasible amount of sunlight. I do however wish that in these first two images I could have vinetted these two photographs a little bit to almost direct my viewer towards the subject of these two photographs, the woman who is either catching the soccer ball (photograph one) or punting the ball (photograph 2). Another photoshop effect i would have liked to have played around with would be the hue and saturation tool, there is an overwhelming amount of green in both of these pictures and i feel they could have benefited if the levels were toyed around with a little bit.

If I had the opportunity to take both of these photographs over I would keep the lighting the same because I was satisfied with the lighting, however I would look for a place where there was not so much green interfering with the shots. Or perhaps I would even attempt to find out what these pictures would look like in black and white. Another thing I would have liked to have done is perhaps taken a series of different action shots from different sports and align them up one next to the other to show the difference in form and posture for each different sport.
